In the distant future, countries do not exist. Earth Prime is controlled by 5-mega Corporations that have cut the galaxy up into spheres of influence.
At the edge of explored space in the void between the known and the unknown, a group of enterprising miners have discovered Magnum-4, a planet of vast wealth. The planet is so isolated that the corporations know only of its existance, not its potential. The miners intend to keep it that way. Planting themselves in their terraformed biospheres, they intend to mine Magnum-4 down to its nickel core, keeping the planet's wealth for themselves. To achieve their ends, they have created a "perfect" society ruled over by a vigilance committee that takes no prisoners.
The vigilance committee is ruled over by Steve Somerset a former pirate. His lover is Lydia Thompson, Third Prime of the Directorate, one of the 5 Earth Prime mega corporations.
Young Harry Salem has been given the dubious job of talking Lydia into returning to Earth Prime to resume her corporate duties. Lydia, of course, has other plans. But everyone's plans come to a screeching halt when Steve is found murdered in his estate's garden.
The only way Harry can get Lydia to return to Earth Prime is to find out who killed Steve. The only problem is... Harry is an information geek and not a detective. But a swift kick in the ass from someone whom even the vigilance committee fears changes that forcing Harry to find a way to get the job done.

I read a lot of low cost and free Sci fi and quite often I get what I pay for. But Murder Beyond the Milky Way is a unique gem. The story is original and the characters are all people you's want to meet. I personally like books where the good guys win and the bad guys lose, guess I'm just old fashioned that way. There is a good amount of technical explanation throughout the book but I did not feel that it detracted from the story. For some people that is a turn off but I think the write found a good balance. If you normally skip those parts, you can do so and still get great enjoyment from the book.
Really, the only issue I had with the book was the editing. There are enough spelling errors (things that MS Word won't catch) and grammar errors that it become irritating. Whenever I run across things like duplicate words or "or" when it needed to be "for", it jerks me out of the story. This story is good enough that I don't want to be torn away. Especially by things easily corrected.
I almost never give 5-star reviews but this story deserved one and I truly hope there is a sequel for Harry in our future.

Murder Beyond the Milky Way edition by Eric B Ruark Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
LOVED IT! Everything I want from a book and more! Within the first page you are thrown into a world described so perfectly you are there! I love when a book throws you into another dimension and it does so beautifully with great characters and an interesting original plot. Great fast read! Can’t wait to see what happens next!
I was given this book as a gift and enjoyed it immensely. It is always fun to see the future through a writer's imagination. So many possibilities to consider. However, what I really liked was that mankind, remained mankind...even down to murder. I am looking forward to the author's second book to see what he does with androids. Should be fun. Overall, a very good read.
I was looking for a good read and Howard Lipman's review of this book caught my eye. I was not disappointed. Murder Beyond the Milky way is the perfect marriage of hard-boiled mystery and Asimov style science fiction. Mr. Ruark has crafted a well-written story with characters that keep you on the edge of your seat. His vivid descriptions of such off-world places like Magnum-4 and Emerson-5 make you feel like you are really there. This book was a real page turner and a very welcomed addition to my library.

If you don't like "tripping" over typos and the more than occasional wrong word (i.e. using "their" instead of "they're") give this one a pass. The author has potential but needs to do a better job of proofreading before submitting the manuscript. Each time I was really getting into the story, I'd "trip" over another error. If that isn't a problem for you, then by all means read Murder Beyond the Milky Way. Even after all the errors the book was definitely worth my time.
I liked this story more than I expected. The author's style in developing the action and character inter reaction was well done. A real murder mystery on a planet far away where everyone has everything they want except one thing, power. This is the story of one man obsession in gaining power.
I very much enjoyed this book. I found that it did not dwell on the science part of science fiction and really used the location as a good setting for a mystery. The story moved along at a good pace. The writing seemed to be pretty solid; I didn't cringe as I was reading it (as I sometimes do with the free novels out there). This is a book that would definitely be worth paying for, I would not have felt ripped off. I will definitely be looking to see if Eric has other novels. I'd love to see more work in this particular universe as I found it quite interesting.
This amazing book is Hard Science fiction ala Isaac Asimov, a murder mystery in Outer Space where science fiction meets hard-boiled mystery in a perfect alliance. Harry Salem is a noir detective from the Raymond Chandler books, but with Eric B. Ruark's unique changes and interpretation. Other characters like Captain O'Rouarke, of the Space Cavalry, Steve Somerset, Lydia Thompson, and Quincey are well-characterized and keep the edge-of-the-seat mystery going. Vivid descriptions of planets like Magnum Four and Emerson Five are well-written with vivid colors and words that fill all of the senses so you actually feel like you're there. Unexpected twists and turns of the plot keep you guessing. I look forward to reading more from this author! (Review by Howard Lipman, pen name PanOrpheus, author of the science fiction alternate history 'Delphic Oracle' and 'Tesla's Tower' books).
